How Tom Adams and His Team Are Bringing The Timeless Beauty And Uncompromising Excellence Of European Building To Newcastle
Despite coming from a family of educators (his father a principal, his mother a teacher), Tom Adam’s path was clear. Recognising Tom’s need to be active and hands-on, his father encouraged him to pursue a trade.
This encouragement led Tom to an apprenticeship that would set the stage for his future career. But it wasn’t until he travelled to Europe that his perspective on building (and life) truly broadened.
European Excellence On Display
In cities like Barcelona and London, Tom saw buildings that had stood the test of time. Structures meticulously crafted centuries ago, still standing strong today.
Tom realised how limited his training in Australia had been. And went on a quest to learn the methods that made these buildings so beautiful and durable.
True Craftsmanship – In Design And Execution
Although Adams Building constructs a lot of new custom homes, Tom has a special place in his heart for renovating existing homes – seeing what others can’t and using innovative designs and techniques to bring out the best.
He developed these skills in Europe where most building projects are renovations (because there is very little land to build new homes).
“I remember working on an elegant 18th-century Georgian terraced house in Clifton UK,” he recalls. “At first glance, it looked a mess. And it took a lot of creativity and problem solving. But behind decades of plaster and paint, we uncovered an amazing gem that became the pride of the street.”
Tom has a special passion for helping families honour the character (and memories) of their home while renovating and extending it to become what the owners had always dreamed it could be.

Using Innovation And Intention To Give You More For Your Money
“I hate the waste I see in building,” Tom laments. “Designers don’t give a thought to how a building will be constructed or what materials are required. As a result, thousands of dollars in materials are simply thrown away. And houses needlessly cost more than they need to.”
That’s why Tom gets so involved in the design of his houses. He gives clients different ways of getting the outcome they want, often saving them thousands they can put towards other features. Simple things like paying attention to sizes can save thousands in building materials. One of his favourites is the dimension of six.
“You’d be surprised how many things come in a derivative of 6 metres,” Tom says.
“It’s the perfect construction measurement. A sheet of steel reinforcement is 6m, concrete expansion joints are placed every 6m, the maximum span for a standard timber beam is 6m, the average car park space is 6m, and many building materials come in 6m lengths.”
Remembering this in the design stage enables you to maximise the space in your home while minimising the building materials and corresponding cost. Plus it produces less waste and is good for the environment.

Millimetres And Degrees Matter
Tom is a stickler for accuracy – especially in the early stages of construction. “I see it all the time,” Tom vents. “Exposed steel that should have been galvanised or painted. Missing flashing that leaves a joint exposed to water damage. Tiles that don’t line up in a corner. Holes drilled through joists and missing bracing that compromises structural strength.”
That’s why Tom is onsite overseeing every stage of his projects. Making sure each tradesperson understands exactly what is expected. And checking all work (even seemingly small things) meets his uncompromising standards of European excellence.
Is This The Sort Of Attention To Detail You’re Looking For?
Some people simply want a generic home that is mass-produced by a team of low-level trades. And that’s fine. Most homes in Australia are built like this.
But if you’re looking for something unique – a home that reflects your personality, enhances your life, and is built with precision and pride that looks better and lasts a lifetime – Adams Building may be the team you’re looking for.
The next step is a Free Q&A Consultation with Tom Adams, the owner. There’s no cost, obligation or pressure. Tom will listen to the vision you have for your home or renovation, and generously share tips from his 22+ years of experience.
Whether you partner with Adams Building or not, you will walk away with knowledge that will save you from making expensive mistakes, and help you have a successful and enjoyable build.
“Job execution is excellent.” (Malcolm -- Lochinvar)
